Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for over 20 years. She is also an accomplished public speech writer. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos featuring commentary and analysis of the representations of women that are prevalent in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that explores the representations of females in popular culture narratives. Committed to destroying the stereotypes that are associated with women in pop culture, she has also been working to address issues relating to harassing women targeted by the media and others online. Sarkeesian, who has an MA in Social and Political Thought at York University, is a sought after public speakers. She has delivered speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. Interested in issues concerning gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the University. A woman with ambitions to start a web-series examining the representation of gender in video games was targeted by an internet-based campaign. The incident did not deter her, but instead strengthened the determination of an activist for women in media. She is a recipient of several awards for her contributions to feministism.
